What is RLD
RLD is a protocol that was formalised back in 2010 by Sally Kay BSc (Hons). It is a specific reflexology technique that focuses on the Lymphatic system. RLD was developed through clinical practice, whilst supporting people affected by cancer. Breast cancer patients suffering from secondary lymphoedema who received RLD experienced less discomfort and swelling and an increase in strength and arm mobility. This led to research being conducted into RLD. The results of this exploratory study were presented by CAMSTRAND 2012, research conference. In 2013, on the strength of these initial findings, a Welsh cancer charity, Tenovus, awarded funding for further research to be conducted in partnership with Cardiff Metropolitan University. In July 2014 the summary of preliminary quantitative data found all participants had reductions in swelling of the affected arm. These results showed a positive trend and suggest that RLD may be helpful in the management of secondary lymphoedema following treatment of breast cancer. I am therefore delighted to be able to offer Reflexology Lymph Drainage to my own clients.
Role of the Lymphatic system
The lymphatic system is a one-way drainage system for the tissues. It helps to provide a circulatory pathway for tissue fluid to be transported as lymph from the tissue spaces of the body into the venous system, where it becomes part of the blood circulation. Through the filtering action of the lymphatic nodes, along with specific organs such as the spleen, the lymphatic system helps to provide immunity against disease. The aim of RLD is to support the lymphatic system and encourage transportation of lymph around the body and improve efficient drainage of tissues.
The Lymphatic system has 3 main functions:-
• Drainage of excess fluid from tissues.
• Generates antibodies to fight infection.
• Absorbs the products of fat digestion from villi of the small intestine.
Who else can benefit from RLD?
The latest feedback from practitioners using this technique has demonstrated that RLD is also suitable for a whole host of conditions, including fibromyalgia, immune-related illness, arthritis, asthma, eczema, psoriasis, headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome and generalised aches and pains, to name but a few.
